“Born to Read: offal from our forest” celebrates the biodiversity of Parelheiros with illustrations signed by children

The collectively-authored work will be launched on July 29 at 6pm at Livraria Novesete in São Paulo

In the backyards, among leaves, trunks, flowers, seeds and small animals, lives the invisible forest that is part of the daily dynamics of Parelheiros, a rural peripheral region 50 km from the center of the municipality of São Paulo. It is this richness that Born to Read: offal from our forest reveals to the public. The book, which is part of the Born to Read collection, published by Selo Emília and IBEAC (Brazilian Institute for Community Studies and Support), will be launched on July 29, from 6pm to 8pm, at Livraria Novesete, in São Paulo.

Produced collectively in the community libraries of Parelheiros, the book brings together illustrations created by children and texts written by educators, reading mediators and community workers, who looked at the ways of life in this São Paulo forest. The result is a mosaic of poetry, images, memories and dreams that inhabit a territory.

The project is coordinated by IBEAC and Instituto Emília, with the support of the Centro Popular de Cultura e Desenvolvimento (CPCD). Lúcia Hiratsuka led the writing workshops, Mariana Zanetti the illustration workshops and Raquel Matsushita the graphic design.

Born to Read: offal from our forest is a book for children and an act of belonging for the Parelheiros community as the authors of their stories.

The funds obtained from sales of the publication will be used entirely to promote reading in Parelheiros.
The first book in the collection – Born to Read, in the best place to live – launched in 2021, is available at Novesete bookstores and also on the website and at the Martins Fontes bookstore on Avenida Paulista, a partner of the project from the start.

The launch is open to the public.
